Over recent weeks Richard Harrington MP has been campaigning for one of the new stations being built in Watford as part of the Croxley Rail Link to be called ‘Vicarage Road’. Hundreds of people signed his petition and he have been speaking regularly to London Underground, putting forward the argument that one of the new stations should be called Vicarage Road, as a name that people in Watford and outside know, and a name that is significant in Watford’s heritage and future.
London Underground agreed that the stations should have names that represent the views of the local community and Richard can think of no better name than Vicarage Road to do that. The other station will be called Cassiobridge.
This is great news for Watford and like many others Richard is looking forward to using our new station with pride when it opens in 2016. Local residents and visitors will use the station when heading to the football stadium, visiting Watford General and in the future, using the new Watford Health Campus.
As well as 2 new Underground stations, the Croxley Rail Link will mean:
- Record investment in Watford
- 2,700 homes will be within 800 metres of a Met line station
- 16 trains an hour between Watford and London
- New businesses and facilities including the new Morisson’s store
The development of the Croxley Rail Link will however mean that the Watford Met station will have to close. With others, Richard campaigned hard to keep the station open however it was ruled unviable. The decision came down to either keeping Watford Met open or not having the new Rail Link and it was rightly decided that the benefits of the new stations outweighed keeping the Met station functioning.
Thanks to all those who got in touch and signed the petition for the Vicarage Road station.
